CSXT Anacostia River Derailment Cleanup
Department of Environment and U.S. National Park Service, Washington, D.C.
This project involved in situ capping of exposed sediments resulting from a previous train derailment. The location was in an historically polluted river within National Park Service lands, downtown Washington D.C. As a result, the site had numerous obstacles to overcome. The project had shallow depths complicated by strong and unusual tidal action. The work also involved working on both the upstream and downstream portions of the remote rail bridge site. This was complicated by the extremely narrow draw in the bridge opening. As a consequence of the derailment, the lift portion of the bridge opening was not operable resulting in very limited overhead clearances.
WLDDI provided a project team and specialized equipment which was mobilized on extremely short notice. We worked with the numerous district and federal regulatory agencies to resolve significant issues and restrictions allowing the construction phase of the project to get off the ground. The innovative use and configuration of the marine equipment chosen for the job resulted in an efficient process to complete the multi-level capping project. The project was performed on a fast track schedule and was finished on time and within budget.
